With all the events that have transpired in the past few days, the greeting of “good morning” seems to be a contradiction. Especially to those parents who have lost so much. And as a nation we mourn with them.
Which makes me think of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Such a blessing and burden was put on her from the beginning. Not only was she chosen to give birth to God’s Son, but she was told as they presented him in the Temple that there would be pain in her life. After Simeon took Jesus in his arms and praised God for fulfilling the promise that was happening at the moment, he also said something that must have bothered Mary.
In Luke 2:34-35 we read these words: “Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, “Many in Israel will fall and many will rise because of this child. He will be a sign from God that many people will not accept. The things they think in secret will be made known and the things that will happen will make your heart sad, too.” (NCV). It is actually more painful in the other translations of the Bible that say, “yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, also).
God, today we thank You for the gift of our children. For those who have been taken so early in their lives, grant their families the only real peace that can be given, and that by You. Thank You for the others who did all that was possible to save them. Even the giving of their own lives. Lord, as You heal our spirits, also heal our land and draw us back to You, which is the only way to have peace. Open our eyes and our hearts to the love You offered in Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
In His service,
