Devotion 12-4-12

Good morning,

In remembering the sermon from last Sunday, I’m thinking again of the Scripture used:  Isaiah 9:1-7.  In verse 2 we read these words:  “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;  Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined.”

Sometimes we don’t appreciate the light till we have none.  Then the smallest light takes on a new meaning.  Ask some of those people still without electricity, or even a home as a result of the monster storm “Sandy.”  They are looking for any light at all.  Yet in their need for even a small light it is nothing compared to the light we need to see from God, namely His Son Jesus Christ.

In 1988 when my dad was near death and he was on oxygen, the lights went out but the bell to the oxygen did not.  This was the middle of the night in south Georgia, and no matches or flashlight could be found so that I could call for help.  Then I remembered a small lipstick case given to me by a friend from the Shriners, and it had a small light.  In all that darkness, I had enough light to call my brother to get help.

We, personally and as a nation, need God’s help.  We need the light that only He can offer.

Heavenly Father, forgive our sins, help us to look to You for the guiding light that we need daily.  We thank You for Your blessings and Your grace.  May Your light shine in and through us to others that Your name might be glorified.

In His service,
Fran

Sad news 11/04/12

Dear prayer warriors:

I learned for Wendy, our children’s director at Wesley, that Shelby Prevatte’s dad died this morning as a result of injuries in a car accident.

Please be in prayer for this family.

God bless you as you pray.

Devotion 10/04/12

Good morning,

What a day yesterday was.  The weather was stormy and so was our lives.  My husband had to be admitted to the hospital and he’s very confused and unhappy with me.  And the thing I came across in Scripture was I Corinthians 13; the love chapter that is read at many weddings.  It was worth reading again and again.  I found some notes that summarized the chapter well.

Love Is——1 Corinthians 13

  1. Suffers long (holy relationships)
  2. Is kind (holy purposes)
  3. Does not envy (holy heart)
  4. Does not brag (holy speech)
  5. Is not arrogant (holy service)
  6. Does not act unbecomingly (holy behavior)
  7. Does not seek its own (holy desires)
  8. Is not easily provoked (holy temperament)
  9. Does not take into account a wrong (holy bookkeeping)
  10. Does not rejoice in unrighteousness (holy conscience)
  11. Rejoices in the truth (holy mind)
  12. Bears all things (holy stability)
  13. Believes all things (holy values)
  14. Hopes all things (holy expectations)
  15. Endures all things (holy sacrifice)

How I wish I could live up to that.  But it is a goal I place before me:  To love as Christ did.

Father in the middle of the storms of life, love us even when we are unlovable.  Give us a heart like Your Son Jesus Christ in whose name I pray.  Amen.

In His service,

Fran
